🥚 Falcom References & Easter Eggs
The 'Onimaru' Chat App
In Hirasaka Academy, students use a messaging app called 'Onimaru' (鬼丸). This is a direct nod to Falcom's tradition of putting in-universe chat apps in their games — it's the spiritual successor to 'Xipha' from Kuro no Kiseki and 'ARCUS II' from Trails of Cold Steel. Every student has unique chat dialogue that changes per chapter. Reading all chat logs across all chapters unlocks a hidden gallery illustration.
Mishy Plushie Locations
Falcom's mascot character Mishy (from the Trails series) appears as a collectible plushie hidden in every district. Find all 7 to unlock a Mishy costume for Rei. Locations: Shijo-dori (crane game machine), Ponto-cho (bar counter), Gion (shrine offering box), Arashiyama (bamboo grove), Fushimi (sake shop), Philosopher's Path (bench), Nishiki Market (fish stall).
Estelle & Joshua Reference
In Chapter 3, two transfer students from 'Liberl Academy' can be found in the academy courtyard discussing the view. Their dialogue directly quotes Estelle and Joshua's famous stargazing scene from Trails in the Sky SC. Talking to them in every chapter they appear (Ch.3, 5, Finale) triggers a special cutscene.
Rean's Tachi in the Kendo Club
The Hirasaka Kendo Club storage room contains a tachi sword engraved with 'Eight Leaves One Blade' (八葉一刀流). This is Rean Schwarzer's sword style from Trails of Cold Steel. Examining it triggers a brief scene where Rei comments on 'feeling a strange resonance'.
Ys Music Easter Egg
In the Shijo-dori electronic goods store, interacting with a display radio cycles through 8-bit versions of classic Ys battle themes. The store clerk comments, 'This was from an old adventure game...' if you listen to all tracks.
👹 Secret Bosses
The Primordial One(始まりの者)
Layer 5 superboss unlocked by collecting all 51 Memory Shards across all 5 layers. This is the hardest non-NG+ boss in the game — a multi-phase encounter against the entity that created the Otherworld Labyrinth. Recommended level: 85+. Drops Rei's legendary weapon 'Twin Fangs — Kagutsuchi'.
💡 After collecting the final shard, return to Layer 1 entrance. A new teleport circle will have appeared.
True Form — Yamata-no-Orochi(八岐大蛇・真)
NG+ exclusive 8-phase boss. Each head corresponds to an element and must be defeated in the correct order (Fire → Ice → Wind → Earth → Light → Dark → Void → All). Defeating it awards the 'Divine Regalia' set: Crown (HP regen), Mirror (reflect projectiles), and Jewel (unlimited SP for 30 seconds per battle).
💡 The correct element order is hinted at in the 'Kojiki Fragment' books sold in the Nishiki Market bookstore. Buy all 5 volumes.
Memory Bosses(記憶のボス)
Five bonus bosses unlocked by collecting all Memory Shards in each layer. Defeating all five in a single playthrough unlocks a special epilogue scene. They must be re-defeated in NG+ for the Yamata-no-Orochi unlock.
💡 Memory Bosses scale to your level. The recommended order is Layer 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5 for first-time clears.
Duel with the Bureau Chief(局長との決闘)
In Chapter 6, if you've completed all 10 available NPC side quests and spoken to the Onmyoji Bureau chief 5 times across different chapters, a hidden option appears during the strategy meeting: 'I want to test my strength against you.' This triggers a 1v1 boss fight against the Bureau Chief. Winning grants the 'Bureau's Finest' accessory. Losing still advances the story but locks you out of the accessory permanently.
💡 The chief uses all 6 elements. Bring talismans that cover your defensive gaps.
📜 Hidden Quests & Scenes
The Stray Cat of Nishiki Market
In Nishiki Market, a stray cat appears at different stalls throughout chapters. Feeding it 10 times (once per chapter from Ch.1 through Finale) transforms it into a guardian spirit that grants the 'Fortune Cat' accessory. Missing a single chapter locks you out.
Midnight Academy Exploration
After acquiring the 'Wall Kick' Soul Board node (Ch.2), return to the academy at night (choose 'Stay at school' instead of 'Return to dorm' during free time). You can explore locked areas of the academy, uncovering documents about the 'Qualified One' program and a hidden Phantom Mist Bottle cache.
The Phantom Painter of Arashiyama
In Arashiyama's bamboo grove (Ch.4-5 only), you may encounter a ghostly figure painting the landscape. Talk to them on three separate in-game days, then bring a 'Phantom Ink Bottle' (found in Layer 4's ruins section) to complete the quest. Rewards a unique gallery piece and the 'Painter's Eye' accessory.
Fuka's Secret Cooking
If you visit the academy cafeteria kitchen during Fuka's free time events in Ch.3, 5, and Finale, you'll witness her attempting (and failing) to cook. The third scene reveals she's been secretly taking cooking lessons from the cafeteria lady — completing this arc unlocks a support skill that heals the full party for 30% HP at battle start.
Chinatsu's Stargazing Event
During Chapter 5, if Chinatsu's FP is above threshold and you choose 'Stargazing' during free time at Philosopher's Path, a fully voiced 5-minute scene plays. This is the highest FP-yielding event in the game and contains critical foreshadowing for the True Ending route.
