2. Story Background at a Glance
The Setting
The story takes place in Hirasaka Academy, a prestigious high school in modern-day Kyoto. Beneath the academy lies a vast, ever-changing supernatural realm known as the Otherworld (異界). Only those who awaken as "Qualified Ones" can perceive and enter this dimension — and you are one of them.
The Premise
You play as Rei Kamiya, a transfer student who arrives at Hirasaka Academy just as strange phenomena begin occurring across the city. After a fateful encounter with a mysterious girl named Chinatsu Momoki, Rei awakens the power to enter the Otherworld. Together with a growing party of allies, Rei must uncover the truth behind the otherworldly threat — the "Eclipse Phenomenon" — that threatens to consume both worlds.
Key Themes
Like all Falcom titles, Kyoto Xanadu emphasizes character relationships, moral dilemmas, and the tension between duty and personal desire. Expect a story-driven experience with fully voiced main scenes, bonding events between characters, and choices that influence relationship development — similar to the Trails and Persona series.
📖 Connection to Previous Games
The original 2015 Kyoto Xanadu was set in Morimiya City. Sakura Gensou moves the action to Kyoto, featuring an entirely new cast alongside cameo appearances from Kou Tokisaka and Asuka Hiiragi. The Xanadu universe follows a shared mythology — the concept of "Qualified Ones" and the Otherworld — but each game is intentionally accessible to new players.
3. Combat System Breakdown
Kyoto Xanadu employs a unique dual-perspective combat systemthat seamlessly shifts between exploration and battle modes. This is the core gameplay loop you'll spend most of your time on — master it early.
🗺️ 2D Exploration Mode
Outside of combat, you explore dungeons in a side-scrolling 2D perspective. This mode is used for navigating the environment, solving puzzles, finding hidden paths, and interacting with objects. You control a party leader but can switch between characters at any time. Each character may have unique traversal abilities — for example, breaking specific obstacles or reaching high ledges.
⚔️ 3D Combat Mode
When you encounter enemies, the game automatically transitionsinto a fully 3D arena combat system. This is real-time action combat reminiscent of Falcom's Ys series — fast, fluid, and demanding. You directly control one character while the AI handles your party members.
🔥 Elemental Affinities
Every character and enemy has an elemental type: Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light, and Dark. Matching the right character to enemy weaknesses deals bonus damage and can trigger status effects. This is not optional on higher difficulties — ignoring elements will make boss fights significantly harder.
🔗 Link Attacks
By filling the Link Gauge through consecutive hits, you can execute powerful Link Attacks— combo moves that chain character skills together. Timing is key: activate a Link Attack during an enemy's recovery animation for maximum damage output.
⚡ Overdrive Chain
The Overdrive Chain is the ultimate offensive tool. When all party members have full SP, you can chain their special moves in rapid succession. Mastering the Overdrive Chain is essential for S-ranking boss battles and speed clears. Start with the character whose element counters the enemy, then chain into your heaviest hitters.
💡 Pro Combat Tip
Don't button mash. Enemies telegraph their attacks with clear visual cues (red flash = unblockable, yellow = parryable). Learn to read these patterns in the Tutorial Ruins — it will pay off for the entire game.

4. Soul Board — The Skill Tree System
The Soul Board(ソウルボード) is Kyoto Xanadu's character progression system — a deep, multi-branching skill tree that defines how each character grows. Think of it as a hybrid between Final Fantasy X's Sphere Grid and Path of Exile's passive tree, but streamlined for an action RPG.
How It Works
Soul Points (SP) are earned by defeating enemies and completing quests
Spend SP to unlock adjacent nodes on the board — each node grants stats, skills, or passive abilities
The board is shared across all characters— but each character has unique "mastery nodes" only they can activate
Nodes are gated by character level and story progression— you can't rush to end-game nodes early
🎯 Early Game Build Strategy
Your first 50 SP should go toward these priorities (in order):
HP Up nodes — survivability is everything in early dungeons
Attack Up nodes — faster kills mean less damage taken
Basic skill unlocks — unlock at least one AoE skill per character
Link Gauge efficiency — lets you use Link Attacks more frequently
Elemental affinity boosts — once you know which elements you rely on most
🚫 Common Mistake
Don't spread SP evenly across all branches. Pick a build direction and commit. Jack-of-all-trades builds will struggle in mid-game boss fights. You can respec later, but it costs rare items.
5. Exploration & Dungeon Mechanics
🏰 The Great Labyrinth
The Great Labyrinthis the game's central dungeon — a massive, procedurally-influenced mega-structure beneath Hirasaka Academy. Each layer introduces new enemy types, environmental hazards, and puzzle mechanics. The labyrinth grows as the story progresses, with new layers unlocking after major story beats.
🗺️ Navigation Essentials
The Mini-Map is your best friend. Check it constantly. Unexplored paths appear dimmed — never leave a floor without filling the map.
Breakable walls often hide rare treasure chests, SP crystals, and sometimes entire hidden boss rooms. Attack any wall that looks even slightly suspicious.
Save points appear before boss rooms and at floor transitions. They fully restore HP and SP — use them. There is no penalty for resting.
Fast travelis available between cleared floors. If you need to return to town for supplies, you can warp back to any save point you've already activated.
📦 Collectibles & Side Content
Dungeons contain several types of collectibles: Memory Shards (lore fragments that unlock backstory), Elemental Cores (used for Soul Board upgrades), and Character Notes (bonding items for relationship events). A thorough exploration of each floor is highly recommended — you cannot revisit some dungeon sections after progressing the story.
🏫 Hirasaka Academy — Hub Area
Between dungeon runs, you'll spend time at Hirasaka Academy. This is where you: accept side quests, trigger character bonding events, shop for items and equipment, and advance the main story. Don't skip side quests — they provide valuable SP, rare items, and influence character relationship outcomes.
6. 10 Essential Tips for New Players
These are non-spoiler, high-impact tips that will save you hours and prevent irreversible mistakes.
1. Prioritize main story until Chapter 2
The first chapter is effectively a tutorial. Push through to Chapter 2 before exploring side content — that's when the full party, Soul Board, and all combat mechanics unlock.
2. Always carry 10+ healing items
Dungeon floors have no shops. Running out of healing mid-dungeon means either dying and losing progress, or a long backtrack. Keep Healing Herbs and SP-restoring items stocked.
3. Check every corner — literally
Hidden passages, breakable walls, and off-path chests are everywhere. The difference between rushing and thorough exploration can be 30% more SP and rare crafting materials per dungeon.
4. Switch party members frequently
Each character has unique elemental affinities and traversal abilities. Some walls can only be broken by specific characters. Rotating your party also ensures everyone stays leveled.
5. Master the parry early
Yellow-flash enemy attacks can be parried for a damage window. Learning this in the Tutorial Ruins makes every subsequent boss fight significantly easier. Practice until it's muscle memory.
6. Don't sell crafting materials
Materials may seem like free money in the early game, but mid-to-late game crafting requires specific low-tier materials that are impossible to farm later. Hoard everything.
7. Bonding events matter
Character relationship events at Hirasaka Academy aren't just flavor text — they unlock unique combat synergies, stat bonuses, and influence the ending. Prioritize the characters you use most.
8. Elemental coverage > raw stats
A balanced team that covers Fire / Water / Wind / Earth is stronger than a max-level team with only one element. Dungeon bosses often have rotating weaknesses.
9. Use the 'Retry' option on bosses
Dying to a boss lets you retry with full HP and items restored, but the boss keeps all damage dealt. There's no downside — always retry instead of reloading a save.
